Motorway
The backbone of the road network for long-distance traffic in Germany is formed by its autobahns, which have a total length of 13,000 km. Based on an average daily traffic volume of almost 50,000 vehicles and around 230 billion vehicle kilometers driven annually, autobahns are the safest roads in Germany. Nevertheless, significant numbers of accidents can occur at slip roads and sections where there are roadworks, in particular. Rising traffic volumes and a growing proportion of truck traffic also increase the risk of accidents on autobahns.
