Tests of model year 2008 car seats in rear-impacts

In 2008 the results of seat tests under rear-impact conditions were published by UDV for the fourth successive year. It is noted with pleasure that many new seats launched by vehicle manufacturers achieved “good” or “acceptable” results when measured in terms of the test protocol and the criteria of the International Insurance Whiplash Prevention Group (IIWPG). However, this positive trend is much less pronounced in the segment of small cars and minivans where the need for protection against neck injury in rear-end collisions is greatest due to their lower mass. Numerical simulations of misuse scenarios were conducted to demonstrate the consequences of poorly adjusted seat backs and head restraints.
