Cars are becoming increasingly safe. In recent years, German Insurers Accident Research has focused on various aspects of road safety relating to cars. These include, for example, driver assistance systems, automated driving, occupant protection and accident patterns involving electric cars.

Distance-related behaviour on motorways

The failure to maintain adequate safety distance is the cause of many accidents on motorways. In 2022 17,755 accidents involving personal injury on motorways and 23,190 associated driving errors were recorded. Nearly a third of those errors document insufficient safety distance.

Accidents caused by wrong-way driving on motorways

In Germany, approximately 1,950 incidents of wrong-way driving occur on motorways every year. By contrast, accidents resulting from wrong-way driving are rare but they have serious consequences. The purpose of the present study was to use accident data relating to wrong-way driving incidents on motorways in order to identify patterns, assess possible countermeasures and compare their effectiveness.

Distraction due to vehicle operation

Functions of vehicle operation, such as windscreen wiper settings, are increasingly being implemented digitally and operated via touch displays. They integrate many functions. However their operation distracts from the driving task. In a study, the UDV therefore investigated how in-vehicle HMI should be designed to be as least distractive as possible.
