Pedestrian facilities

Pedestrians are in particular danger on the roads. In 2015, pedestrians accounted for one in six fatalities among road users. Around two-thirds of them were killed in accidents in built-up areas. They are most at risk when crossing roads and at intersections. Traffic lights, zebra crossings or central islands can improve the safety of pedestrians when crossing the road, depending on the local situation and the design and layout of the road. In addition to these one-off measures, safe networks of paths that can be used by all pedestrians must be created, particularly in built-up areas. The needs of children, senior citizens and people with limited mobility must be given particular consideration.
