Diagonal crossings

They are very unusual in Germany – but more often seen in some other countries: intersections at which only pedestrians can cross the road diagonally when they have a green light (diagonal crossings).

In a student research project, the UDV investigated whether diagonal crossings meet criteria for road safety and capacity. The study found that although accidents between turning vehicles and pedestrians can be effectively avoided, waiting times for both pedestrians and drivers are considerably longer. It is therefore recommended that diagonal crossings should only be used in cases where no other measures for avoiding accidents between turning vehicles and pedestrians are effective or in locations where very large numbers of pedestrians cross diagonally.
